Chapter Twenty-Six

Bev had heard from other women that one never gets over her ex-lover until a new one comes into her life. They were right, and they were wrong. To any observer, it appeared that Bev had stopped dwelling on the lover she had lost. Although she’d never admit it to anyone, the highlight of her day was still seeing Anne at work. And when Anne chose to bestow a small kindness on her, her fantasies ran wild. But now, she had an outlet for them: her stories.

Bob was so impressed with the piece she’d shown him the night of her revelation that he’d taken it to a publisher friend of his, who had included it in a women’s anthology of love stories. That story was the first of many that would find their way to anthologies.

As her stories sold, and then articles on women’s issues, Bev’s confidence grew even more. She continued to work with Anne during the day, but her writing became her doorway to a larger world. She spoke at women’s groups, and earned a prominent reputation within the lesbian community. Dinner invitations came from women in the Hamptons, and on the Cape.

Five years later, Earth time, her first novel was due to be released by a major publishing house. Nevertheless, Bev’s joy was bittersweet. Her life and Anne’s had taken separate paths. They still worked together. In front of other colleagues, Anne acted as though everything was fine; including Bev in conversations, asking her opinion, laughing, even putting her arm around Bev’s shoulder in a friendly way. But when they were alone in the office, they rarely spoke.

Thinking of how much they had once shared, and knowing that now Anne would have no interest in her current success, brought a twinge of sadness to Bev. Still, she was functioning well without Anne in her life. But what if Bev decided that enough was enough, and really walked away? I couldn’t let the women drift any further apart, or their destinies would not be met. I needed to help them to reconnect as friends, and from there, go on to become the Perfect Pairing they were supposed to be.

Generally, I had little need to recharge. My passion radiated—until Cornelia. With her nearby, I found myself needing to recharge more often. Again and again, I returned to one of the enchanted realms I conjured up.

Was I the only one aware of the destructive energy that flowed from Cornelia? What was the cause of her fury? What was behind her antisocial behavior? Anne and Bev might never come together if I didn’t find out. There had to be a way. Normally, my senses allowed me to know what I needed to know. Seeing auras gave me additional information, but I could see absolutely no aura about Cornelia. Yet, when I mentioned this to Theo, she assured me that Cornelia did indeed have an aura. The Spirit Guide Selma, overhearing our conversation, said she had seen it, too.

I sensed something grossly unconventional going on.
